What documents do I need to rent a car in Hakone?
Most overseas visitors need a valid driver's license from their home country plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention. Drivers using a license from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan need the original license and an official Japanese translation instead. A valid Japanese driver's license issued in Japan and a valid U.S. Forces, Japan (USFJ) Form 4EJ operator's permit (SOFA permit) issued to an eligible SOFA-status driver are also accepted. Please present the original valid license or permit at pickup.
